Before joining STFC I graduated with a degree in Nuclear Engineering (MEng) from the University of Birmingham. I greatly enjoyed the computing modules in my course and knew that I wanted to change direction towards software and computational science.
I chose the SCD graduate scheme due to its focus on technical and professional development, I wanted a supportive environment while I learnt in-depth programming and computing skills. Fortunately, I am able to do that while staying involved with science through supporting world class research and on occasion conducting some myself.
My graduate projects to date have involved simulating the behavior of a next-generation nuclear reactor using the department’s high-performance computing cluster and building a distributed computing platform in support of the STFC Cloud service. I have also had the opportunity to work on computing activities with local schools, help host public site days and become a STEM ambassador.
