SCD Industrial Placement Student Profiles
Ashish Menghani – Software engineer 2020 – 21

Ashish Menghani is an international student from Mumbai, India, who is currently studying BSc Computer Science at Brunel University in London.

Ashish works alongside his fellow placement student, George Coldstream, as a software engineer in the Scientific Computing Department's (SCD) Data Analysis as a Service (DAaaS) team. DAaaS provides users of the large facilities (e.g. ISIS Neutron and Muon Source and the Central Laser Facility) access to high performance computing, large memory machines and complex software stacks for effective and timely processing of data.

As a part of this team, Ashish says, “On a day to day basis, I work on developing and adding functionalities to a software project assigned to me. I also attend morning catch-ups, webinars and various meetings daily."

“I was attracted to the role as I get to work on different software projects and gain experience in various aspects of software development. Also, the opportunity to work in an innovative scientific research environment like the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) was fascinating for me."

Ashish further notes that the variety provided by getting to work on different software projects is his favourite part about working in STFC and adds that it “keeps things new and exciting".

Ashish is currently working remotely due to the restrictions put in place because of COVID-19, and says, “I have adapted to it, working from the comfort of my own home has been mostly good".

Offering advice to potential placement student applicants, Ashish adds, “Based on my experience so far, I will say that STFC has an innovative scientific research environment - working here is very collaborative and friendly. The placement programme gives you a lot of experience and you learn a lot."

Outside of work Ashish enjoys watching films, listening to music and getting creative with his drawing and painting.
