Last year, as we were planning for CIUK 2019, we lost an
incredibly important member of the CIUK Scientific Advisory Committee
with the sudden and unexpected passing of Jacky Pallas at the age of
just 54. Jacky was head of e-Research at King's College London and for
the last three years had been an active and vocal member of the CIUK
SAC, helping to shape the direction our event has taken and pushing
through many positive changes, whilst championing diversity and the
inclusion of young researchers. In her memory, and in recognition of her
passion for our conference, we decided to introduce an annual
award that will highlight the work of an early career researcher and
will allow the award winner a slot in the main programme at CIUK.
We are delighted to announce that the winnner of the CIUK 2020 Jacky Pallas Memorial Award is JOHN DUDLEY from the University of Cambridge.

John will present his work on "Probabilistic User Interface Design Strategies for Next-Generation Augmented Reality Applications" at CIUK 2020 on Thursday 3 December.
Abstract: Head-mounted Augmented Reality devices enable the blending of digital content into the physical world such that the apparent distinction between what is real and what is virtual begins to blur. This emerging paradigm unlocks fundamentally new ways of performing work or delivering entertainment. However, building enjoyable and productive interfaces and interactions for Augmented Reality devices necessitates a step change from the design of conventional experiences delivered on a computer, tablet or smartphone. This presentation will introduce the concept of probabilistic user interface design and demonstrate its potential in supporting the development of next-generation Augmented Reality applications. Two illustrative studies will be presented tackling the critical computing task of entering and displaying textual content in Augmented Reality.

The winner of the inaugraul Award was Demi Pink from King's College London who presented her work on "The Structure of Lipid-Based Nanoparticles for Drug Delivery" as part of the main programme at CIUK 2019.
Demi was presented with her award by Jacky's partner Rachel Dickenson, her sister Andrea and her niece Danielle.
