For society to be sustainable, realising circular flows of molecules and materials will be fundamental to delivering the circular economy. This Discussion meeting brought together scientists and engineers to highlight efforts to meet the formidable challenge of 'keeping the molecules in play' by addressing important global challenges such as using waste carbon dioxide, harnessing biotechnology and eliminating plastics pollution.

Building on the topics of the above Discussion meeting this Satellite meeting focused on identifying specific scientific challenges and priority setting for realising a circular economy. Each session focused on a core aspect of science and was introduced by three experts leading to in-depth discussion, breakout sessions and final summary.

Barbara Montanari, Director of CoSeC, was a panel member in the session entitled “The Digitization of Science for the Circular Economy”. Barbara talked about the need to build a research data pipeline
that allows researchers to combine several experimental and computational techniques in order to advance the complex science that enables the circular economy.

Recorded audio of the presentations will be available on the Discussion meeting and Satellite meeting pages soon. Meeting papers will be available in a future issue of Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A
