SCD Industrial Placement Student Profiles
George Coldstream – Software Engineer 2020 - 21

George Coldstream is currently studying BSc Computer Science at the University of Lincoln.

George works in the Data Analysis as a Service team (DAaaS) in the Scientific Computing Department (SCD), where he spends most of his day programming. DAaaS provide users of the large facilities (e.g. ISIS Neutron and Muon Source and soon the Central Laser Facility) access to high performance computing, large memory machines and complex software stacks for effective and timely processing of data. George's primary responsibility involves developing the front and backend of a new web interface for the DAaaS team. As a part of his work, he spends a lot of time in Zoom meetings, where he discusses plans for development, user feedback and solutions for any problems that have been encountered. Such meetings are important for keeping the team on track and ensuring that senior staff members remain informed, but are also used as an opportunity to catch up with his line manager and engage in virtual social events.

When asked why George was attracted to this role in SCD, he responded, “I wanted something within the software engineering field, but I also wanted something that would give me a chance to help change the world for the better.  The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) as an organisation hit all those boxes - the Council's directives were just what I was looking for. Working in DAaaS is a brilliant position and very rewarding, especially knowing that the service I am helping to develop enables scientists from all over the world to analyse their data from facilities like ISIS, and allows them to carry out ground breaking research."

Speaking about his favourite part of working for STFC, George says, “It's inspiring to be part of such a unique and diverse community. It's a real pleasure working with such a lovely team of people and being able to work in a very active development environment."

To students who are thinking about applying for a role within STFC, George says, “There are tons of roles and a variety of teams and opportunities, so spend a while looking at all the different options. Do your research, spend some time on your CV and cover letter and make sure to express your personality and interests."

George is also a part of the intake of industrial placement students who have been largely affected by COVID-19. We asked him what it has been like working remotely and how he has adapted to this style of work.

“With an area like software engineering it was quite easy to adapt to remote working - I've found it to be quite comfortable. Zoom meetings and messaging the team on Slack have been working great for team communication. The lack of social interaction can be bit tough at times, and can make it more challenging to get know your colleagues or get to know people in other departments. The placement student virtual social event has been a great help recently, and I helped coordinate a weekly social with my team which has been very welcomed."

Outside of work, George loves his photography, music, travelling and cooking!
